Altar Servers

The place of the Altar Server in the liturgical celebration remains one of prominence and distinction. The main purpose of the Altar Server is to act as a leader of prayer by assisting the priest in the celebration of the Eucharist. Any boy or girl in the fifth grade or above can participate as an Altar Server. All those who are interested in serving as Altar servers register your name in the signup form. A course of instruction is given and installation is held.

Extraordinary Ministers of Eucharist

Extraordinary Ministers of Eucharist serve the community of Sacred Heart by distributing the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ during Communion at Mass. The Holy Eucharist is the most august sacrament, in which Christ the Lord Himself is contained, offered and received, and by which the Church constantly lives and grows.

Pope Paul VI described Eucharistic ministers thus: “The faithful who are special ministers of communion must be persons whose good qualities of Christian life, faith and morals recommend them. Let them strive to be worthy of this great office, foster their own devotion to the Eucharist, and show an example to the rest of the faithful by their own devotion and reverence toward the most august sacrament of the altar.”
Immensae caritatis, 1973.

Lectors

The lector serves a unique role in the liturgy. It is Jesus himself who speaks in the Scriptures. The lector in proclaiming the Scriptures, uses voice, presence, and personality so that the Word of God may be heard. "Faith comes by hearing," says St. Paul.

These individuals serve the community be proclaiming the first and second readings, and by offering the prayers of general intercession. One called to be a lector must be trained in reading and proclaiming the Word clearly and expressively to the people. If your special gift is public speaking and you are a confirmed teen or adult, we invite you to become a lector or reader. You will receive training and be asked to serve about once a month at a Mass of your choice. For this week's schedule, refer to the Bulletin.

Usher Society

While every ministry affects our worship, some ways of service are more closely related to the parish’s liturgical celebration. One of these ministries is that of the usher. Ushers are responsible for the good order in the liturgical celebrations. They meet and greet the people at the door, lead them to their places and to Communion stations, direct processions and hand out bulletins, and take up collections in the church. Anyone 18 years of age or older, male or female can register your name.
