Scripture readings for next Sunday February 12, 2012, Liturgical Year B, Cycle II

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time , First Reading: Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46 , Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 32:1-2, 5, 11 , Second Reading: First Corinthians 10:31--11:1 , Gospel: Mark 1:40-45 .  Today's Rosary: The Glorious Mysteries

A Family Perspective - Fifth Sunday  (Mark 1:29-39) In today’s gospel Jesus went to the “house of Andrew and Simon” to relax but discovered that “Simon’s mother-in-law was very ill. Like Jesus we come home to relax but are confronted with problems. Take a tip from Andrew and Simon who “told Jesus about it at once.”

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time“Brothers and sisters:  I should like you to be free of anxieties.”  - 1 Corinthians 7:32.  How many anxieties do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about attaining ever more material possessions?  Yet, God tells us that only the hand that is open to give can also be open to receive His peace and joy.  A heart or a hand clenched in anxiety and greed can never truly receive anything.

Making a Report of Sexual Misconduct - A report of sexual misconduct may be initiated at the Diocese of Kalamazoo's Sexual Misconduct Question and Reporting Line: 877-802-0115.   A caller will be requested to provide his or her name and telephone number.  All calls regarding sexual misconduct will be returned, usually within one hour.  This toll-free number has been established as a part of the Diocese's effort to protect children, young people and other vulnerable people in our schools, parishes and ministries.  This line is for reporting suspected sexual misconduct or child abuse within Diocesan institutions and ministries only.  If you have some other concern about Diocesan schools, parishes or ministries, please contact the appropriate Diocesan school, parish or office directly.

Do You have any old Palms left from Easters' Past?  Please

bring them to the back of the church

to be prepared for Ash Wednesday.  Thank You!

Pennies From Harding's - When I was a little kid, a few pennies truly made an impression on me.  I could walk to the corner store and come home with a bag of candy.  Most of us today would not bend over to pick a penny on the ground.  But there is one place where a penny is still very powerful and that's the Harding's E-Scrip Program.  Yes, when you have a Harding card and hand it to the clerk to scam your purchase, it is very important.  We just received the latest report that this program of pennies from Harding's grew to the large amount of $1,274.08 for 2011 (or 127,408 pennies-would you like to count them?).  We thank the Harding's store and each of you good people that care enough to dig out your card every time you make a purchase at this special store.  If anyone doesn't have a card or has lost it, please enter your name, address, city and phone number on a piece of paper and drop it in the collection basket at the church.  We will mail one to you….

From Fr. Chucks Keyboard:

Here we are in the month of February, the shortest month of the year.  In the Midwest I consider that February's weather makes it also the ugliest month.  Maybe that's why it was given only 28 days, or precisely,  28.25 days.  The ancients must have been thinking, "let's shove this ugly month out of sight in a hurry".

Of course, this year of 2012 gives us a February of 29 days and perhaps a late winter of snow, rather than its usual mid, frigid rains, ice, and dull browns I ever direction.  Who knows?  Certainly not the weather gurus.

Perhaps I should be a bit gentler about February since some family members and friends have birthdays during this otherwise dreary month.  Some will break out of the dull with reasons to celebrate.

In the Church Year the central event of February in most years is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the holy season of Lent.   The two major feasts of this month, other than the Sundays of course, are the Presentation of the Lord ( Feb. 2nd) and the Chair of St. Peter (Feb. 22nd, but replace this year by Ash Wednesday).

There is no feast on the "leap day" of February 29th, since the Church couldn't decide the profound theological question, "Which saint deserves to be remembered only once every 4 years?"   I trust our founding gathers didn't choose the leap years as the time for Presidential Elections for the reason of tormenting us with even one extra day of zany campaigning.

Two other thoughts come to my cluttered mind:

The Letter from Bishop Bradley in today's bulletin calls attention to an important issue for the Catholic Church, along with many other religious institutions.  The letter concerns the mandate from the Department of Health and Human Services to require health plans to cover costs for prescription contraceptives, including those which induce abortions, sterilization procedures, and related issues.  This contradicts, as our bishops understand it, the key principles of religious liberty and freedom of conscience.  I hope that you have been aware of the progress of this issue over the past year or so.  Letting our representatives know what we think about this issue will be very important.

Finally, I'll be away for the first few days of this week.  I managed to have appointments with my new physician and my longtime dentist plus two other commitments fall closely together early this week.  I plan to be back in town on Wednesday evening.

Has the pro football season finally ended?  What a blessing?

Lent of 2012 will begin on February 22nd.  Have you started to think about it yet? And let's try to "enjoy" this rather ugly month.

                                                                             Father Chuck
